The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) has introduced a new open data portal to start creating a one-stop-shop for transport open data.

The new open data portal consolidates DTP’s multiple open data platforms into one centralised hub.

It has been designed to provide:

  • easy access to a wide range of accurate and consistent static and real-time public transport and road data on one platform
  • transport open datasets in the global standards and formats widely used by the open data community
  • ability to download and use all transport open datasets for free.

Changes to accessing data

There have been changes to DTP datasets to streamline and improve them as part of the work behind developing the new open data portal:

  • Heavy vehicle datasets are now being managed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and have been removed from DataVic.
  • DTP has combined the below datasets into a new collection called ‘Freeway Travel Time’ and these collections have been removed from DataVic:
    • Freeway Travel Time – GIS
    • Freeway Travel Time – Traffic
  • DTP has combined the below datasets into a new collection called ‘GTFS Realtime’ and these collections have been removed from DataVic:
    • GTFS-Realtime Tram Service Alerts
    • GTFS-Realtime Tram Trip Updates
    • GTFS-Realtime Tram Vehicle Position
    • GTFS-Realtime Metro Trains Service Alerts
    • GTFS-Realtime Metro Trains Vehicle Positions
    • GTFS-Realtime Metro Trains Trip Updates
    • GTFS-Realtime Metro Buses Trip Updates
  • For some data collections, the latest data is listed separately from historical data. For example, the latest speed zone data is available at Speed Zones, while historical data is available at Speed Zones - historical. These will be consolidated into a single data collection in the coming weeks.

Please note that DTP APIs listed on DataVic will continue to be accessed through the Data Exchange Platform until further notice.

Watch this space for further updates for open data community and key stakeholders in advance of changes to datasets and how they are accessed. To find out more about the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal, please visit the Transport Victoria website.
